ROME (Reuters) - A strategic partnership between Italy and China would be more valuable than a deal such as the Belt and Road initiative, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Wednesday addressing Parliament. "A strategic partnership involves all sectors, so it is more important than single bilateral agreements such as the Silk Road (Belt and Road), which so far is unsatisfactory in terms of exports and investment," Tajani said. An Italian official close to the matter said that during his visit to China Tajani signalled the possibility for Italy to pull out from the BRI deal while stressing the desire to keep strong ties with Beijing. On Wednesday Tajani repeated that the Italian government would consult parliament before finalising its position on the issue. After meeting Tajani in Beijing this week, China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said cooperation with Italy had been fruitful despite Italian scepticism.

ROME, April 18 (Reuters) - Italy's data protection watchdog is ready to allow the return of the ChatGPT chatbot at the end of April if its maker OpenAI takes "useful steps" to address the agency's concerns, the authority's chief Pasquale Stanzione said in an interview published on Tuesday. Microsoft Corp-backed (MSFT.O) OpenAI took ChatGPT offline in Italy in late March after the watchdog temporarily restricted its personal data processing and began a probe into a suspected breach of privacy rules. "We are ready to reopen ChatGPT on April 30 if there is a willingness on the part of OpenAI to take useful steps. The data protection body led by Stanzione last week set out a list of demands which it said OpenAI must meet by April 30 to address its concerns. Italy was the first western European country to curb ChatGPT, but its rapid development has attracted attention from lawmakers and regulators in several countries.

In recent weeks authorities made it harder for same-sex couples to be legal parents and lawmakers proposed an anti-surrogacy law widely seen as targeting gay couples. In January, the government issued orders that municipalities stop the registration of most children with same-sex parents, complicating access to schooling and medical services. Rainbow Families, a group representing same-sex parents in Italy, says its members are parents to around 1,500 children, but that this underestimates the national total. In some places, already-registered children of same-sex families are now being erased from the records, upon the initiative of prosecutors. In similar cases previously, judges have routinely ruled against same-sex parents.

ROME, March 9 (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to boost economic ties with Italy, he said ahead of a visit to the country, raising the prospect of supplying Rome with natural gas. "I would like to see more economic cooperation (between Israel and Italy) ... In June last year, Israel and Egypt signed a deal with the European Union aimed at boosting natural gas exports to Europe. He also told la Repubblica he would ask Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Israel claims Jerusalem as its capital but it is not recognised as such by most countries and its status under international law is disputed pending a resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

ROME, March 8 (Reuters) - Brian Eno, the renowned British musician and visual artist who has worked with Talking Heads, U2 and David Bowie, will receive the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement from the Venice Biennale 2023, the organiser said on Wednesday. Eno, 74, who describes himself as a 'non-musician', came to prominence in the early 1970s as a founding member of the band Roxy Music. He is best known for his contributions to ambient music and work in rock, pop and electronica. The music department of the Venice Biennale decided to honour Eno "for his research into the quality, beauty and diffusion of digital sound and for his conception of the acoustic space as a compositional instrument," the statement said. Eno will be given the award at a ceremony on Oct.22 as part of Biennale Musica 2023 in Venice.

"After years of struggle and pain, my parents were acquitted," Renzi said in a tweet. "I do not wish anyone to live through what my parents had to live through, they did not deserve so much hate. At the last national election on Sept. 25, Renzi teamed up with the Azione party led by Carlo Calenda and got about 8% of the vote. The lower court handed a third defendant, businessman Luigi Dagostino, a two-year term for having accepted bogus invoices.

Up to 200 million euros of the capital will come from France's AXA (AXAF.PA), MPS' partner in an insurance joint-venture. Another 50 million euros are being guaranteed by London-based fund Algebris, whose founder Davide Serra is a close associate of Lovaglio. The state will put in 1.6 billion euros towards the capital raising, based on its 64% stake. Local banking foundations in Tuscany - charitable organisations overseen by Italy's Treasury - have already put in some 30 million euros. After its market value shrunk to just 256 million euros, MPS will sell the new shares with a discount of only 8.6% over Wednesday's closing price stripped of subscription rights.

Another 50 million euros are being guaranteed by London-based fund Algebris, whose founder Davide Serra is a close associate of Lovaglio. The state will put in 1.6 billion euros towards the capital raising, based on its 64% stake. If MPS gathers less than the maximum 2.5 billion euros, the state's contribution will be proportionally reduced so as not to exceed 64% of the total. At least 100 million euros will come from France's AXA (AXAF.PA), MPS' partner in an insurance joint-venture. After its market value shrunk to just 256 million euros, MPS will sell the new shares with a discount of just 8.6% over Wednesday's closing price stripped of subscription rights.
